OUR STORY OF CRAFT

We may be masters of our craft, but that doesn’t mean we know it all. We’re always exploring, always discovering, always learning. Because we have a simple, steadfast aim. All our experience and expertise devoted to one purpose – making Aberlour the best it can be.

INGREDIENTS FROM OUR HOME

We know where home is. It’s a little village called Aberlour. This is where our roots are, and where our future lies.

We’re proud of our home, which is why we source our ingredients here. The soft, pure water comes from the nearby Birkenbush springs and our barley comes from local farms, no more than 15 miles away. Sourcing locally means we can be sure of the purity and quality, while being kinder to the environment.

STRAIGHT FROM THE STILL – THE NEW MAKE

Our distilled spirit, known as new-make spirit, is the key to our quality single malt.

With meticulous craft and respect for our natural ingredients, we create a delicate distillate with gentle hints of blackcurrant, red berries and citrus – perfect for maturation in our sherry casks. Each day, our master distiller noses every batch of this new make spirit, considering every detail before allowing it to be poured into our specially selected casks and left to mature into Aberlour single malt whisky.

HAND SELECTED SHERRY CASKS

Every year, we connect with our partners at their sherry bodegas. Having worked with them for decades, we have built a relationship of understanding, respect and trust.

Working together to create the perfect cask to complement our new make spirit, our casks are built and prepared to our exact specification of Spanish oak and conditioned with Oloroso sherry. Finally, when the sherry has finished imparting its rich flavours, we aim to bring the casks to Scotland in the cold winter months, to help preserve their qualities.

Why do we go to all this trouble? The answer is in every drop of Aberlour single malt whisky, because with greater care comes greater reward.

DOUBLE CASK MATURATION

The qualities that make Aberlour whisky unique owe much to our expertise in double cask maturation.

Almost without exception, all of our single malts are made from liquid aged in both sherry casks and American oak casks.

Over many years, the wood of the sherry cask adds a certain sweetness and rich, warm fruity notes. The American oak gives notes of vanilla and a mellow, smooth finish. When combined by the experts of Aberlour, the result is a single malt of rare sophistication.
